TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash in downtown Tucson late Friday, Nov. 9 has turned himself in to the police.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Lawrence Rodriguez.
He has been charged with failure to remain at the scene of a injury involved accident.
The Tucson Police Department responded to a report of a serious injury hit-and-run on West Speedway Boulevard and North Grande Avenue just before 6 p.m.
The victim, a 58-year-old man, was transported to Banner University Medical Center. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The deceased victim has not been identified.
TPD detectives interviewed several witnesses that said the pedestrian was walking across Speedway northbound on the west side of Grande Ave. He was not on a crosswalk when he was struck by the hit-and-run vehicle.
Evidence gathered at the scene prove that speed was a factor in this collision.
Witnesses tell police that the suspect vehicle was driving westbound on Speedway at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic.
The suspect vehicle is described as being a late 1990’s to an early 2000’s model white Toyota 4Runner with substantial front-end damage and missing a driver side mirror.
Rodriguez’s vehicle has been located and seized as evidence.
