TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Nearly three years after submitting a request, the Satanic Temple of Arizona will be giving the invocation, this time at a Sahuarita Town Council meeting.
According to a Sahuarita Sun article the group’s Tucson chapter submitted its request in early 2016, but was told the list was full. The invocation is generally rotated among local faiths, however after being turned down by several cities including Phoenix and Scottsdale, they didn’t think they would ever get a date.
The Satanic Temple of Arizona will be giving the invocation on Sept. 9, according to the Sahuarita Sun and it will be the first for the group in Arizona.
They got their date due to responding to an email blast from Lisa Cole, the Town of Sahuarita Clerk, which stated there was availability for 2019.
“We’re very happy that Sahuarita is honoring pluralism,” Stu de Haan, lawyer and media liaison for TST-Arizona said in the Sahuarita Sun article. “We’re not doing anything nefarious, we’re just wanting to exercise our rights as a religious organization. We just want to be heard.”
