According to a national survey, Americans are planning to spend less money on Mother's Day gifts this year than last year.  The National Retail Federation says the average American plans to spend about $124 on a Mother's Day gift this year, compared to about $139 last year.

At Casas Adobes Flower Shop near Oracle and Ina Roads, owner Mike Cox says orders for Mother's Day bouquets have been pouring in, but not quite as briskly as in years past.  "We've noticed the intensity has come later in the week," Cox said.  "In previous years, it would be spread more evenly throughout the week."

Antonio Ulloa is buying some flowers for his mother, but he's cutting his overall gift budget in half this year because of the tough economy.  "I'm not going to buy chocolates and all the extra stuff this year," he said.  "It's sad that we have to limit ourselves, because it's our moms, but you've got to do what you've got to do."

Local restaurants also depend on big spikes in business on Mother's Day.  At Bluefin Seafood Bistro, owners say the dining industry has been feeling the heat over the past year.  "Business is down," said Jim Murphy, executive chef and owner.  "But we're doing things to bring in guests, our menus have recently changed."

This Mother's Day weekend may bring a taste of success, as many families threat their moms to brunch specials and dinner.  "It might be a little less than last year," Murphy said.  "But we have a lot of reservations, so we're very happy with the amount of people we have."
