When the 1983 flood washed out the old wooden, one-lane bridge along Sunset Road, Pima County attempted a bond package to replace it with an upgraded version.

The county was unsuccessful.

In the meantime, some west side residents have missed their crossing.

"It would take a big load off Silverbell, which is going to wreck and ruin all the time," said Dorothy Triphan who remembers the old bridge. She's a westside neighbor.

With the bond unsuccessful, the county tried again, by including the crossing as part of the Regional Transportation Authority package, passed by voters in May, 2006.

The new crossing would connect Silverbell to River road, spanning I-10 and the Santa Cruz River, and would include an at-grade separation, eliminating the railroad crossing.

The crossing, coupled with widening of Silverbell, would ease traffic congestion for drivers between Ina and Grant.

Construction would begin no sooner than 2017, under the RTA plan.
