A Tucson charter school and the director of another school take top honors when it comes to educating kids.

The Arizona Charter Schools Association named Sonoran Science Academy the 2009 Charter School of the Year.

The academy opened nine years ago, with only 87 students.

Today it serves more than 700.

It's known for preparing students for college, and it's focus on technology.

The 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Dr. Reginald Barr of AmeriSchools Academy.

Dr. Barr was a founding staff member of University High School, and had been an educator for more than 50 years.
