TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) – A cat and a working smoke detector saved a Tucson man from a house fire early Monday morning. The fire broke out at 5:21 a.m. Monday on East Douglas Place, near 22nd and Kolb, said Tucson Fire Captain Trish Tracy. Eight trucks and 23 firefighters were called out to the home. Crews had the fire out in less than 20 minutes.
As the smoke detector went off, the man's cat jumped on him and woke him up. The man living in the home called 9-1-1 to report the fire. It was started in his kitchen by a candle that was left burning, Tracy said.
The kitchen was destroyed and firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to release the heat, Tracy said. Everyone got out safely but Tracy says this fire is an important reminder to everyone to check smoke detectors, blow out candles and turn off appliances before heading to bed. Smoke detectors should be replaced every year and checked every month.
