PHOENIX (AP) - The budget-balancing plan unveiled Monday by Arizona legislators includes abolishing the state's funding for full-day kindergarten.

Funding would revert to half-day under the plan formally proposed Monday by Republican legislative leaders who used Gov. Jan Brewer's budget proposal as a foundation.  Brewer included the reduction in her proposal.

Full-day kindergarten was a major policy initiative of former Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat who left office last year to U.S. Homeland Security secretary.

Republican legislators aim to save $218 million in the next fiscal year by eliminating full-day kindergarten funding.  It's the single largest education cutback included in the plan.
