Immigration sweep in metro Phoenix enters 2nd day

Associated Press - March 19, 2010 6:04 AM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - For the second straight day, Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and volunteer posse members will patrol metropolitan Phoenix on Friday in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's latest crime and immigration sweep.

Arpaio says the special patrol was meant to target drug traffickers and the stash houses and vehicles used by immigrant smugglers. It was Arpaio's 14th immigration sweep since early 2008.

Critics say Arpaio's deputies have racially profiled Hispanics in the sweeps.

The sheriff denies the allegation, saying deputies approach people only when they have probable cause to believe people had committed crimes.

The 2-day patrol is set to end late Friday night.
