For the first time since the Tucson Diocese filed for bankruptcy, Bishop Gerald Kicanas is addressing the Catholic community. In churches all over Southern Arizona, parishioners will read, hear or see what the Bishop has to say about Chapter 11.
"Without the filter from the other news media, Catholics will be able to hear directly from the Bishop," said Fred Allison, a diocese spokesman.This weekend, Catholics will be able to read a front-page statement from Bishop Kicanas in the Catholic Vision newspaper. The title of the statement is "Keep Your Eye on the Rainbow." The paper also has a section with some common questions and answers about Chapter 11.
"The Bishop will get the message out that parishioners need to know how this Chapter 11 will or will not affect them and their parishes," Allison said.
Other Catholics may also hear an audio cassette or see a 12-minute video of the Bishop. It was recorded just after the diocese filed for bankruptcy Monday.
"They usually don't go to mass for the reason of being informed or given news," Allison said.In this case, the diocese felt it had to address the issue at the time and place Catholics gather -- in church.
"The more we know, the better," said parishioner Frank Valenzuela.
