It sounds too simple, but researchers in Illinois found that the most physically fit third, fourth and fifth graders tend to score highest on the Illinois Standard Achievement Test.
The scientists aren't sure why, but they think that being physically active may boost the number of molecules that protect the brain and prevent the loss of brain tissue.
The researchers are from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
They presented their findings during the annual meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
