After gene therapy, two melanoma patients have been in full remission for 18 months.
Researchers genetically boosted their blood cells to turn the cells into cancer attackers.
The National Cancer Institute did the experiment, and two years later, the patients have no signs of the disease.
The American Cancer Society says it's the first evidence that gene therapy can beat back cancer.
But, there's the caution: the gene therapy did nothing to help 15 other melanoma patients.
So the researchers are making the shots stronger.
Researchers now hope to start testing the gene therapy on small numbers of patients who have advanced cancers, including breast and colon cancers.
The findings are in the September 1 issue of Science magazine.
