It could be because no incumbent is running in this year's election, with President Bush at the end of his second term.
It may also be a couple dozen hopefuls from both major parties are responding to a contest call by the Tucson Weekly.
In any event, voters in Arizona have until February 5 to make up their minds about a slate of two dozen candidates from each of the democratic and republican parties.
While some openly admit they have no hope of sitting in the Oval Office January 2009, it's not stopping them from taking a shot.
"I'm thinking about the old cliche anybody can be President," said Dr. John Garcia, a professor in the UA's Political Science Department. "I'm not sure that's true, but it may be the case that anybody, almost anybody can run for President."
Voters have until midnight Monday, January 7, to register as a democrat or republican.
