A major power outage hit Tucson Wedneday night, knocking out power to about 20,000 people in midtown and the south and southwest sides, Tucson Electric Power said. This was the second major outage of the day in Southern Arizona, after the lights went out for about 18,000 people south of Tucson between Rio Rico and Nogales.
TEP blames the outage on equipment failure at a switching yard. The power went out after 8pm, but crews restored service around 9:40pm.
The outage was scattered over an area extending from Broadway on the north, to Valencia on the south, Wilmot road on the east, and Bopp Road on the west.
Earlier, part of a transmission tower broke south of Tucson, causing the outage that left thousands in the dark south of town. That outage started around 11:30 in the morning and lasted until mid-afternoon.
