That revolving door of dieting.
People trying to lose weight will go from one diet to another, looking for the magic formula to shed extra pounds.
Now some of the work has been done for them.
Researchers just spent two years comparing diets.
They looked at low-fat, low-carb and the Mediterranean Diet.
The low-fat dieters lost an average of 6-and-a-half pounds.
People on the Mediterranean Diet did better, losing 10 pounds.
Those on the mostly meat-free, low carb diet lost even more.
Plus, people on the Mediterranean and low carb diets also had better cholesterol levels.
The Mediterranean plan consisted of fish, fruits, vegetables and good fats from olive oil and nuts.
Low carb eaters were encouraged to consume healthy fats as well.
The experts say healthy fats make a diet easier to stick with.
You feel full longer, and are less likely to binge.
The study authors say no one diet works for everyone and doctors should be flexible.
Dr. Meir Stampfer with Brigham and Women's Hospital says "I think the first choice for weight loss should be Mediterranean style or low carb. And low fat, it works for some people but it shouldn't be the first choice."
