The current financial crisis and proposed fix have left many people with more questions than answers. That's why leaders at the University of Arizona Eller College of Management invited members of the public to attend an informational forum Wednesday night on campus.
Nearly 300 people packed into a crowded lecture auditorium at McClelland Hall. Eller College Dean Paul Portney adressed the gathering. He was joined by Chris Lamoureux, head of the department of finance at Eller College, and Gerry Swanson, the Thomas R. Brown Chair in Economic Education at Eller College.
"We want to try to explain how we got into this fix, what it is the government is proposing to do, and how that might affect them in the months and weeks ahead," said Dean Portney.
Among the many people attending were Manek Bhappu, a local small business owner. "I'm trying to stay employed, and I'm trying to keep my men employed too." Bhappu says he's concerned about the state of the economy, and attended the forum tonight looking for answers from the local panel of economic experts. "My biggest concern is, what's going to keep this from happening again."
The panel presented information, and then took questions from the audience. They hope, in addition to addressing questions, that they address any fears and frustration. "It's an opportunity to just explain how we got here, what's being proposed, and what the consequences might be, that I hope will maybe reduce the paranoia level a little bit," Portney said.
