Group Helps Arthritis Patients

There is a group in Tucson dedicated to helping people with arthritis improve their lives. It doesn't do research or offer treatment, but it's making life better for people who deal with aches and pains every day.

Marla Diaz will graduate from the University of Arizona this year. She was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis when she was seven. Going to college was always part of her plan. but the Tucson Arthritis Support League helped her get there sooner than she ever imagined.

The all volunteer T.A.S.L. gave Marla a scholarship. In fact, nine other students have graduated from college with help from the League.  T.A.S.L raises money throughout the year for its college program.

Rita Dennis is a longtime volunteer for the T.A.S.L.. She doesn't have arthritis herself, but she understands a young person's desire to succeed, whether they're disabled or not. Rita and the other volunteers have one goal in mind, to help people with arthritis be independent, and not have to ask for help with everyday tasks.

The league has a kiosk at Tucson Medical Center where people can get self-help devices, very cheap. Little helpers like buttoners, grabbers and reachers give patients their independence.  The kiosk is open Wednesdays from noon until three.  it's located in the outpatient clinic on the west side of TMC.
