A European study confirms what a U.S. study found: An experimental diet pill can help people shed pounds and keep them off.
This sets the stage for a French company, Sanofi-Aventis, to seek approval to sell Acomplia in the U.S.
Researchers say the drug helped people lose 16 pounds, on average, over two years.
The study involved more than 1,500 severely obese people in Europe.
Acomplia blocks a pleasure center in the brain, leading people to eat less.
It also acts directly on fat cells to prevent weight gain.
