Saturday's winter storm didn't keep people away from Sunrise Park Resort (http://www.sunriseskipark.com/) In fact, it brought 'em out, "we're excited because obviously every little bit of snow sure makes a difference," says Sunrise Park Mountain Operations
Manager Bill London, "we're getting more trails open, we've people playing in the snow so we're having a good time!" It has been a slow start to the season at Sunrise which is located north of Tucson in the White mountains.
A lack of significant snowfall has prevented the whole mountain from opening but this latest winter storm has dumped a lot of fresh snow and mountain managers are anxiously awaiting more snow so they can open more runs. But this latest round of snow is keeping skiers like Ron Hutty happy. He's been with the Tucson Ski Club for more than 25 years, "that's one real advantage of going with a club like the Tucson Ski Club is your always meeting new people and we connect and go skiing later on individually and it's really a super organization."
Randy Shouse, President of the Tucson Ski Club, says it's all about having a lot of fun, "people get to know each other and when we go home it's like leaving summer camp, we got new friends and people can go up with each other."
Skiing is a sport for the whole family to enjoy. It's a great way to get kids off the couch and it even helps with their social skills. Just ask 11 year old Steve Shouse, "when you go on the ski lift there's so many kids you get to meet and you get to meet kids from all over Arizona when you come up to Sunrise."
London says over the years many Tucsonans have "adopted" Sunrise as their winter playground, "historically when people in Tucson want to come up to the mountains they come up and see us and it's fun because you see a lot of familiar faces, it's almost like a family reunion."
