Man charged with murder for death of baby in midtown Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A man is in the Pima County Jail following the death of his girlfriend’s baby.

Police first arrested Nicholes Liggens, 19, for child abuse on December 17, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

It was the day after first responders rushed a 4-month-old baby from an apartment complex in midtown Tucson to the hospital. The December 22 news release release stated the baby was initially unresponsive but medical staff managed to regain his vital signs.

Police stated Liggens, who was dating the baby’s mother, was in charge of the his care at the time the baby was found unresponsive at the apartment on Grant Road east of Columbus Boulevard. At the hospital, investigators learned the baby suffered significant head trauma that didn’t appear to be an accident.

Officers arrested Liggens for child abuse against the baby and non-lfe threatening injuries sustained by the baby’s 3-year-old sibling, according to the news release.

When they learned the morning of December 22 that the baby had died, officers added an additional charge of first degree murder, plus a new child abuse charge for suspsected non-life-threatening injuries to the baby’s 2-year-old sibling.
