Salpointe hoops star plays for brother

Shooting for a state title

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Salpointe Catholic High School boys basketball team is motivated to win a state title. Last season they lost in the state championship to Shadow Mountain.

This is the last chance for senior forward slash guard Majok Deng. The 6-foot-5 student athlete is on a mission to help bring the trophy back to Tucson.

Deng is one of the top recruits in the state. He has received letters from a number of Division 1 colleges and universities.

He and his family arrived in Tucson in 2011, leaving South Sudan in Africa because of the war. Deng’s mom came to Tucson to become a midwife. Later Deng would join the Lancers basketball team.

This season there’s something missing in the young man’s life. His brother Lual, shot and killed after an argument in Phoenix in 2018. Deng told Tucson News Now, his brother was someone he looked up to, and had always encouraged him to work hard.

He is dedicating this season to his brother.
