Second phase of flood control project begins this week
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Pima County will continue a flood control project this week west of the downtown area.
Crews will remove 150,000 cubic feet of sediment from the Santa Cruz River that the county says has built up over the last 30 years.
The work is phase two of a larger effort aimed at alleviating flooding to nearby neighborhoods like Menlo Park and Barrio Hollywood during winter rains and the monsoon.
Neighbors say they are looking forward to the project as the area continues to grow.
“There’s a lot of growth going on here, a lot of construction and for the three and a half years since I moved into the area, we’re very excited about the changes that have taken place,” says Thomas Giannini, who lives in Menlo Park.
The second phase focuses on the area between Silverlake Road and Cushing Street. The west bank of the loop will be closed on weekdays to accommodate the work.
Crews should wrap up in about two months and will begin phase three next year.
The sediment will be taken to the ‘A’ Mountain landfill or an area north of Grant Road.
