TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Mindy Buscemi opened the door to new possibilities when she entered the Arizona Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons office on Wednesday morning.
"This is a gamechanger for me," she explained.
The morning started with her least favorite things. Cameras in her face and posing for photos with the dental team. She doesn’t show her teeth when she smiles, because she said it’s the norm.
Buscemi has constantly struggled with pain and infection in her teeth.
"It's horrible. I can't even explain that feeling. It's not something I want to wish on my worst enemy," she said.
Wednesday was a new day, though. She's moving forward.
“I’ve had really back luck, so for the cards to turn around on me, it’s awesome,” Buscemi explained.
Buscemi has faced several challenges in the last year. She lost her husband on Valentine's Day, leaving her to mother four kids alone - including one with autism.
"Some days are rough," she said.
She had a new reason to smile, though, because she was about to get a new one. Buscemi was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to get a mouth makeover.
Wednesday was surgery day. The team, including Dr. Negin Saghafi at AOMS, prepared to take out her old teeth and implant new ones.
Saghafi said she’s happy to be a part of this life-changing experience, “A lot of our life revolves around eating and social events. It can even impact your job and finding a job.” She loves to help boost her patients' self-confidence. “You’re still helping someone and that just feels really good.”
The day was an emotional one for Buscemi as she accepted that the next time she saw a camera, she would be more than happy to pose.
"I can't wait to be able to smile in photographs with my kids and feel pretty again," Buscemi explained.
This is the second time Arizona Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons has done a free makeover like this for someone in our community and they plan to keep it going in the future.
