Hot Chicken making splash in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD News 13) - A Southern staple with a twist has arrived in the Old Pueblo and people are rushing out to try it.

The man behind it all is Peter "Pops" Yucupicio.

Yucupicio is the owner of Pops Hot Chicken, a food truck that often in downtown Tucson.

The chicken has locals waiting in lines for the Nashville tradition.

It all started with a trip to a music festival in Tennessee.

“That was first time I’d heard of Nashville chicken,” Pops said. “Fell in love with it. (Spent four years) trying to make it at my house and finally got to where I thought it was perfect.”

He then quit his job with the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and dedicated his time to selling his craft.

His menu consists of just one chicken sandwich, but you can order it at the heat level you prefer.

If the chicken isn’t enough, Pops has a few secret weapons.

“We put a thing called ‘slaw-vocado’,” he said. “Our only bonding for our coleslaw is avocado. We also have ‘yonce’ sauce, which is a chipotle mayo. Everything we do is from scratch.”

Only a month and a half out, he can thank social media for the success he’s gained. Nearly 2,000 people have followed the truck on Instagram to find out where to get their fix.

“Usually by the time we park, there’s already a nice line,” he said. “By 7:30-8, we’re out of chicken.”

His passion for cooking is found in that first bite.

Pops said his favorite part is meeting the people who come out to test the heat.

“For anyone who hasn’t come out yet, and wants to test how hot we can get, it’s for the people who wanna go crazy,” he said.
