UPDATE: Name released for 2nd fatality at Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON, AZ (KOLD News 13) - Officials with the National Park Service have released the name of the woman who died at the park on Tuesday, April 23.

69-year-old Cynthia Ackley was from Peoria, Arizona, she died at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, after falling some 200 feet, according to a NPS news release.

Park rangers responded to a call around 1:05 p.m. Tuesday about a person needing help at a rocky point west of Pipe Creek Vista.

Sadly Ackley fell before a rescue effort could begin. According to the release, a park helicopter and a technical rescue team and rangers located her body, which was recovered a short time later.

No further details have been released, according to the release.

Visitors are encouraged by park staff to have a safe visit by staying on designated trails and walkways, always keeping a safe distance from the edge of the rim and staying behind all railings and fences at overlooks.
