TUCSON, AZ (KOLD News 13) - Salpointe Catholic took another step Wednesday night toward the first baseball state title in school history.

The Lancers beat Casa Grande Vista Grande 3-2 to advance to the Conference 4A state semifinals. It was the third time this season Salpointe Catholic has knocked off their region rivals.

Salpointe Catholic (23-6) will play again next Thursday against the winner of a Saturday Elimination bracket game between Scottsdale Saguaro and Vista Grande.

Ian Ponce broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI single. He went 3-for-3 in the game.

Ryan Grabosch picked up the win in relief. He shutdown a Vista Grande rally in the sixth after the Spartans had tied the game against Lancers starter Jaeden Swanberg.

Swanberg allowed two runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Sophomore Cade McGee pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save.

Adam Belloc suffered the loss for Vista Grande.

Salpointe Catholic lost in the 2017 Conference 4A finals to two-time defending champion Nogales.

Conference 4A will have a new champion this season as The Apaches are now in Conference 5A.

Nogales (24-4) plays for a spot in the semifinals on Thursday at Tempe’s Diablo Stadium against 4th seed Desert Mountain.
