TUCSON, AZ (KOLD News 13) - Saturday night’s championship boxing rematches in Tucson did not go well for the challengers.
Both Miguel Berchelt and Emanuel Navarette successfully defending their belts at Tucson Arena.
Navarette in the co-main event completely took apart Issac Dogboe, finally finishing the former champion with a technical knockout in the 12th and final round to retain his WBO Super Bantamweight title.
The 24-year old won for the 22nd consecutive fight (27-1) dating back to 2013. He had beaten Dogboe in December to win the belt.
Meanwhile Francisco Vargas’ corner threw in the towel (retired) against Berchelt (36-1) prior to the start of the seventh round. The champion like he had done against the challenger two years ago, battered Vargas’s face.
It was Berchelt’s fifth defense of the WBC Super Featherweight championship.
Tucson’s Manny Guajardo was the lone local fighter on the card after an injury to Nogales’ Judas Estrada forced the cancellation of his scheduled bout with Cholla High grad Christopher Gonzalez.
Guajardo (5-0) won a unanimous decision over Jonathan Espino in a four-round middleweight affair. Two of the three judges gave the fight to Guajardo (39-37 and 40-36) while one judge had it a draw (38-38).
