The United States federal government estimates more than 1,700 children died in 2017 due to abuse and neglect. But in a KOLD Investigation, we found that many states undercount the number of deaths. In fact, there has never been an accurate count on the number of children killed by abuse and neglect. Child experts say accurate data helps prevent child deaths due to abuse. InvestigateTV and KOLD found the Dept. of Health and Human Services has ignored Congressional directives to do a better job collecting data – many of the issues come down to states having different standards for reporting cases.
