COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (KOLD News 13) - With the completion of the One County, One Card project on May 9, residents may now use a single library card at all 12 public library locations in Cochise County. This includes the libraries in Benson, Bisbee, Bowie, Douglas, Elfrida, Huachuca City, Portal, Sierra Vista, Sunizona, Sunsites, Tombstone, and Willcox.

Library users will not need to get a new library card to participate in One County, One Card. Patrons who already have a card in good standing will simply be able to use it at more locations. Users may also select any library to pick up holds and return library materials.

Residents who have library cards from multiple libraries in Cochise County will be asked to select a “home library.” That library card will be accepted at every other location, and any duplicate accounts will be deleted. Users who have lost items or charges from any library are asked to settle any outstanding balances to ensure uninterrupted service.

One County, One Card is a cooperative project of the Cochise County Library District and the seven municipal libraries in Cochise County. The libraries have shared materials between locations since the 1980s and have offered a shared online library catalog since 1997.

Accepting library cards issued at other libraries is the next step toward offering seamless library service for all Cochise County residents.

“Many other library systems allow patrons to use a single card at multiple locations,” said Library District Director Amadee Ricketts. “The difference in Cochise County is that the system includes branch libraries operated by the Library District along with member libraries operated by towns.”

Including libraries funded and operated by different entities required substantial changes in the way the libraries work together. Since undertaking the One Card project in 2017, the libraries have streamlined outdated circulation rules, adopted a modern online library catalog, and implemented credit card payments countywide. The libraries have also worked together to clean up the library database, eliminating old and inactive patron records and identifying patrons with multiple library accounts.

The Cochise County Library District operates branch libraries in Bowie, Elfrida, Portal, Sunizona, and Sunsites, and offers support services for the municipal libraries in Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Huachuca City, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, and Willcox.
