TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - 60-year-old Gordon Mackey has passed away following a fatal pedestrian collision in the area of 2600 North First Ave earlier this month.
On May 7, 2019, just after 8 p.m., officers from Operations Division West and members of the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to the area of 2600 North First Avenue for a report of a serious injury collision involving a pedestrian. When Tucson Fire arrived on scene, they immediately transported the Mackey to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Tucson Police Traffic Investigations Unit responded to continue the investigation. After processing the scene and speaking with witnesses, they were able to determine the driver of the Mazda pickup truck was southbound on First Avenue in the curb lane. Mackey was crossing the road from east to west when he was struck by the pickup truck approximately 200 feet from intersection of North First Avenue and East Jacinto Street. The driver cooperated with the investigation. Based on roadway evidence, speed does not appear to be a factor. Officers with the Tucson Police DUI Unit responded and determined the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision. Mackey was not crossing in a crosswalk (painted or implied).
On May 20, 2019, the Traffic Investigations Unit was contacted by the Office of the Medical Examiner and was informed that Mackey had passed away from the injuries sustained in this collision. Mr. Mackey’s next of kin was present when he passed away.
This investigation is ongoing.
