James Smith breaks his 400 hurdles school record again to reach NCAA Final

Day 1 of #NCAATF is up and down for UA

TUCSON, Ariz. - Austin, Texas – The NCAA Championships opened competition on Wednesday June 5th in Austin, Texas. Highlighting Arizona’s opening day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, was James Smith, who set an Arizona School Record, and Jordan Geist who was tabbed as a First-Team All-American.

Freshman James Smith clocked a time of 49.67 in the 400-meter hurdles to qualify on time for the final.

His time was good for a new PR for the second race in a row, and betters his Arizona School and Freshman Records.

Jordan Geist wrapped up the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in the shot put. The sophomore earned First-Team All-American status with a toss of 20. 31m (66-7.75).

UA will resume competition on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Tucson time with Tatum Waggoner’s appearance in the 400-meter dash.
