TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - A two-alarm house fire near 17th and Campbell sent large puffs of smoke in the air on Monday afternoon.
Multiple calls to 9-1-1 were made from the property owner and other neighbors in the area when smoke and flames were seen from the yard of a home in the 2000 block of East 17th Street. Crews reported smoke in the area as they were traveling to the incident.
Smoke could be seen from the east-side of Downtown Tucson at its peak of activity.
An exterior fire had rapidly extended into a residence structure and the east and south sides of the structure were fully engulfed and threatening exposures in very close proximity to the involved home.
A second alarm was called due to the behavior of the fire and additional firefighters and units were called to the scene. Crews were able to access the back of the property through the alleyway, however, fire attack from that angle was challenging due to the heavy smoke and utility lines that were affected by the fire activity.
The command staff on scene requested Tucson Electric Power expedite their response to the scene to help with securing the utilities and life/scene safety.
While first arriving units starting pulling hose and getting water into the property, additional crews were performing primary searches on the neighboring structures and checking for any fire extension.
The fire was called under control forty-five minutes after firefighters arrived on-scene. Twenty-five Tucson Fire units responded with over fifty firefighters on scene.
No injuries were reported by crews on scene.
The involved house structure was not occupied and being used for storage by the owner. A resident on the property to the west was not impacted and no one was referred to or in need of Red Cross services. The property owner was able to safely evacuate the property after calling 9-1-1 and trying to put out the exterior fire in the backyard/alley with fire extinguishers and a garden hose line.
Tucson Fire Investigations and Tucson Police were on scene.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
Tucson Fire and Tucson Police are investigating this fire as suspicious.
Work to keep an area around your home structure free of any combustibles, including brush, weeds, and firewood piles. Keeping a zone or area several feet away from the structure of the home can minimize the chance of flames or surface fire touching the home.
