TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - An armed suspect was shot by police at Fort Lowell Park in Tucson Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The officer involved in the shooting was Officer Alberto Olivares, a 24-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department.
As of Thursday night, the suspect in his 30s was in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The TPD said the incident began around 11 a.m. when officers noticed suspicious activity between a man and woman. When the man left, they began talking to the woman in the park.
The TPD said that the man returned and charged at officers while holding a knife. The suspect, who knows the woman, allegedly ignored multiple warnings before he was shot.
“We’re still trying to figure out why that individual approached the officers and what his relationship was with the female we were speaking with,” said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a spokesman for the TPD.
The woman was not injured and neither were any of the officers.
