Traffic stop turns into hours-long standoff on Tucson's south side

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - A routine traffic stop quickly escalated to four-hour stand off near 12th Avenue and Irvington Road on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Officers with the Tucson Police Department tried to pull over a driver for a routine traffic stop near Mission Road and Ajo Way at around 10 a.m. The driver would not stop and, after a records check, police determined the driver had an outstanding warrant for a domestic violence charge.

The driver stopped at 12th Avenue and Irvington Road and, police say, he was armed with a knife. Tucson police shut down the area and deployed SWAT and K9 teams to the scene.

After about four hours of negotiation, officers apprehended the suspect after he attempted to flee on foot, according to police.

Police have not released the name of the suspect.
