TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - The Green Valley Fire Department responded to a truck-train crash that happened Friday morning, Jan. 31.
At 9:16 a.m. a Union Pacific train collided with a truck about a half-mile south of South Nogales Highway in Sahuarita, according to information from Tim McMahan with Union Pacific.
The vehicle belonged to F.I.C.O., a local pecan farm, and was hauling water. The driver reported seeing the train approaching the crossing and thought he could cross safely. However, he reported the truck didn’t clear the tracks before the train struck the back portion of the vehicle spinning it around.
The truck’s driver was transported to University Medical Center Green Valley for evaluation by request of his employer and the train crew was unharmed.
The conductor of the train was able to bring the train to a complete stop within a quarter mile as he reported the train was traveling at approx. 30 miles an hour. Southern Pacific personnel are in route and will inspect the track and train prior to it being released from the incident to continue it’s run.
