TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - The Tucson Roadrunners continued their opening series vs the San Jose Barracuda Monday night, besting the Barracuda 5-3 to open the season 2-0 for the first second time in three seasons.
The first period was filled with action, as both teams exchanged pleasantries early and often, with some of the tension from yesterday’s matchup carrying over. The real excitement came in the last six minutes of the period, as both teams scored twice to head to the locker rooms tied at 2. Jan Jenik had his North American pro goal, while 2019-20 AHL All-Star Lane Pederson had his first of the year after leading the team in goals two seasons ago.
Mike Carcone assisted Jan Jenik on his first period goal, so Jenik returned the favor with a beauty of a pass to Carcone that found the back of the net to give Tucson a 3-2 lead early on into the second period. Linemates Lane Pederson and Michael Bunting would join these two in having both a goal and an assist, as Pederson assisted on Bunting’s goal late into the period, Tucson’s first power-play goal of the season. Tucson entered the final 20 minutes with a 4-2 lead.
Things got a little dicey in the third period as the Barracuda went on three straight power-plays, scoring a goal in the process to cut the lead to one. The Roadrunners were able to survive the onslaught and added another goal of their own to boost the lead back up to 2. The Roadrunners would go on to defeat the Barracuda 5-3, securing an opening series sweep and a 2-0 record heading into their first real road trip of the season.
Ivan Prosvetov was once again solid between the pipes tonight for the Roadrunners, making 33 saves on 36 shots. Alexei Malnichuk was once again in goal for the Barracuda tonight with 28 saves.
The Roadrunners will play their next game Friday, February 12th at the Toyota Sports Performance Center against the Ontario Reign, at 7 p.m. You can listen to the game in Tucson on FOX 1450 AM and on the iHeart Radio app or watch the game on AHL TV.
