TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - A joint investigation is underway after an auto collision at Bilby Road and Campbell Avenue.
According to a news release, on Sunday, Feb. 21, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputy saw a Jeep SUV driving at an excessive speed near Valencia and Country Club Road.
The deputy requested PCSD Air Unit to assist before trying to stop the vehicle.
At 12:30 a.m., the deputy attempted a traffic stop. Officials say the SUV pulled over in an apartment complex parking lot at 6200 S. Campbell Avenue but fled before the officer could make contact with the driver.
The diver of the SUV has been identified as 39-year-old Jesus Ismael Rodriguez.
The news release state the deputy did not pursue the vehicle in accordance with PCSD policy.
Shortly after the SUV fled from the stop, it was involved in an auto collision at Bilby Road and Campbell Avenue.
The collision involved a red 1998 Jeep Cherokee and a white 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. Sadly, the driver the Malibu was pronounced deceased at the scene and has been identified as 24-year-old Reina Alexis Cota. Next of kin has been notified.
Tucson Police Department responded to the scene and is conducting the auto collision investigation. PCSD is conducting a concurrent traffic investigation regarding the initial stop and actions of the deputy.
