TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - This week a Tucson family, dedicated to making the community a safer and healthier place, is Arizona’s Heart & Sol.

“They’re a good salt to the earth family. I think they are both assets to the community. Bri wants to be a nurse and Dan is in law enforcement,” said Beau Wilson, a friend and colleague of Heart & Sol recipients Dan and Briana Bowling.

Beau and Dan work together at the Tucson Police Department. Dan has a canine, named Zoe, who works alongside him to detect and help stop the spread of drugs in our community. Dan’s wife, Briana, says it’s ironic she married a police officer because she grew up in a law enforcement family.

“My dad was with Tucson police for over 25 years and my mom worked at the sheriff’s department,” Briana said.

Briana and Dan had a baby, named Haley, six months ago. Last week their world was turned upside down when Haley was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma.

“It’s heartbreaking for anyone and then it happens to you,” Briana said. “You just don’t want to believe it.”

Their family was immediately rushed to a Phoenix children’s hospital and they’ve spent each day and night there since. Haley has completed her first round of chemo and is expected to have up to ten rounds in total.

“She’s starting to lose some of her hair which is, like, devastating. She’s super pale and you can tell she’s just not being herself,” Dan said.

Dan has spent his career working to make Tucson a better place. Now the care and support he devoted to others are coming back full circle.

“This little 14 pound, six-month-old baby has united a community. She’s united a city, a police department. She has done so much. The response we’ve gotten has been overwhelmingly amazing,” Briana said.

The gratitude they have was only emphasized when Briana and Dan were presented with the $300 Heart & Sol award.

“The community should be getting this award. They have just backed us so much. Being in law enforcement. I’ve had this huge response and support there,” Dan said.

A GoFundMe page is set up for Haley’s fight against cancer. Thank you to our sponsor Casino Del Sol for helping us recognize those in the community who are going above and beyond.
