TEMPE, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - A Tempe man faces first-degree murder charges for allegedly beating and stabbing his girlfriend to death early Sunday morning.

Police arrested 23-year-old Mason Nez at a local apartment complex after witnesses said they saw him attack and stab his 23-year-old girlfriend. AZ Family reports the incident started when Nez, his girlfriend and a few friends went over to an apartment complex clubhouse to play pool.

A witness told police Nez, his girlfriend and a group of people were sitting near the pool table at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, April 18, when two people stood up and left. That’s when Nez got up and attacked his girlfriend with a pocket knife. The witness and their two friends ran out of the clubhouse and called the police.

Witnesses said there was no ongoing altercation between Nez and his girlfriend before the brutal attack. The whole ordeal was captured on a surveillance camera and verified what witnesses told police, according to AZ Family.

Nez was booked into the Maricopa County jail on one count of first-degree murder.
