UPDATE: Tucson police arrest suspect in deadly downtown shooting
TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - One man is now behind bars for a deadly shooting in downtown Tucson.
Investigators with the Tucson Police Department arrested 32-year-old Joseph Paul Cavanagh for fatally shooting 57-year-old Andre Michael Lee at an apartment complex on north Fifth Avenue late Thursday, April 29, 2021.
Officials say Cavanagh was at the apartment complex to visit his father. As he was leaving, he ran into the victim Andrew Michael Lee as well as Lee’s girlfriend according to police. An argument between Cavanagh and Lee started as Lee’s girlfriend was walking to her friend’s apartment. Cavanagh allegedly followed Lee into the apartment, though he did not have permission to be there. Lee went into the bathroom and his girlfriend said she saw Cavanagh pull out a black handgun and follow Lee into the room.
She said she heard Cavanagh say something about having a knife pulled on him before hearing one to three gunshots. According to the complaint, officers found a knife next to Cavanah’s body. They also said they found a black handgun when Cavanagh was arrested.
The TPD said a woman was seen leaving the scene with Cavanagh. That woman claimed Cavanagh was intoxicated and upset before running into Lee because he had lost his keys and phone. She admitted that there was an altercation between Cavanagh and Lee in the hallway of the complex. She said she stayed in the hallway as Cavanagh walked into the apartment. She heard a gunshot before seeing Cavanagh run out. She said Cavanagh told her he shot Lee after Lee had pulled a knife on him.
Just three hours, at around 2:40 a.m. Friday, investigators found and arrested Cavanagh near east Golf Link Road and south Kolb Road.
He was booked into the Pima County jail on first-degree murder and first-degree burglary charges.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the shooting can call 88-CRIME.
