One dead following fatal crash on Tucson’s east side
TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - One man is dead after a fatal vehicle collision that happened on July 28.
According to officials, officers from Operations Division Midtown responded to the intersection of South Craycroft Road and East Golf Links Road for a report of a serious-injury collision.
Upon arrival, Tucson Fire personnel were on the scene rendering aid to the driver of a white 2017 Nissan Sentra. The driver was then transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Detectives were later notified that the driver had succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as 27-year-old Alejandro Rubalcaba.
Officers then learned that a passenger from the Nissan fled from the scene after the collision. They were located a short time later by officers and interviewed.
Traffic Unit Detectives continued the investigation and found that the Nissan was traveling eastbound on Golf Links Road at an excessive speed. The Nissan then drove off the roadway and struck a light pole on the south side of the road.
According to officials, both the driver and passenger were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
Detectives also noted that Rubalcaba had a suspended driver’s license. Witness interviews with roadway evidence indicate that excessive speed is the major contributing factor, according to officials.
The investigation is ongoing. Officers noted that no citations or arrests are expected.
