TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Investigators are holding off saying what led them to serve a search warrant on a far southwest side home, leading to a deadly confrontation with the suspect.
A Pima County Sheriff's spokesman says 26-year old Jose Guerena was killed after he fired on a SWAT team serving the warrant at his home in the 7100 block of South Redwater, near Wade and Valencia roads.
It happened about 9:30 Thursday morning.
Pima County Sheriff's spokesmen say Guerena, his wife and 4-year-old son were inside the home.
SWAT officers got the woman and child out.
Soon after, neighbors heard shots.
"Well, this morning I was awakened by a couple of gunshots. By the time I got out of bed and got dressed, there was a whole bunch of police officers out here. They pretty much told us to go back inside the house," says one neighbor.
Here's what deputies say was happening just then.
Sheriff's Bureau Chief Rick Kastigar says SWAT team members were going down a hallway in the home when Guerena confronted them.
Kastigar says Guerena was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle.
"He fired a shot at the SWAT team which struck a protective shield that was being held by the very first individual in the home," Kastigar says.
"As I indicated earlier, SWAT officers from both our agency and other agencies returned fire," Kastigar continues.
The suspect was dead at the scene.
The officers were protected by the shield and were not hit.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department heads the multi-agency SWAT team that includes officers from Marana, Sahuarita and Oro Valley.
Kastigar explained that SWAT was used to serve the warrant because this case met the criteria for a high risk operation.
Kastigar explained, "When we serve a search warrant that has any suggestion of, what we call, high risk that there's chance that the people inside might resist or use violence against law enforcement, we serve those warrants with a SWAT team."
Investigators still were marking and collecting evidence late in the day on Thursday.
As is normal procedure, an investigation into the shooting has begun.
