TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - A historic Arizona mission is now offering free, guided tours to the public.

The San Xavier Mission is offering 45-minute tours, led by about 20 volunteers. They'll take place several times each day, except on Sundays.

In the past, travel companies had taken groups through the mission, but they had no official connection to San Xavier.

That's changing now, as officials with the historic mission try to generate increased interest in preserving the "white dove of the desert."

"I think it's important for people to understand that this mission is an important piece of Arizona history," said docent John Cartoff.

The San Xavier Mission is the oldest European structure in Arizona.
