TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - The Pima County Sheriff's office will assist in a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System on Wednesday.

The test will be broadcast over radio and television stations and will last approximately three minutes.

While the public has experienced the tests of the broadcasting system in years past, this is the first time the system will be tested simultaneously nationwide, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The department said residents should not call 9-1-1 in response to the test, despite the relatively long duration.

During an actual catastrophic event, authorities will transmit crucial information to the public through as many methods as possible. The national EAS program provides the nation with an unparalleled communications network, available even under the direst conditions, the sheriff's office said.
