YUMA, AZ (KOLD) - A 32-year-old Tucson man died Friday after an accident in the Imperial Sand Dunes west of Yuma.

Daniel R. Carrillo's ATV rolled over on him just after midnight Friday, Rural/Metro Rescue spokesperson Charly McMurdie said Saturday.

Emergency personnel reached the man deep into the sand dunes, and he was flown to a Yuma hospital by helicopter.

Carrillo was not wearing a seat belt or a helmet in his Rhino rough-terrain vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said. He was riding in an area known as the Buttercup dunes.

Carillo's 10-year-old son was with him during the incident and was uninjured.

Thanksgiving weekend is the busiest time of the year for ATVs in the sand dunes, McCurdie said.

About 170,000 people were expected to visit the dunes over the four-day holiday weekend. They are located about 10 miles northwest of Yuma in Imperial County, Calif.

"The dunes were crawling with people on vehicles, having fun," she said.
