Lawmakers plan another bill allowing guns on campus

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - State lawmakers are planning another attempt to pass a law that would allow guns on college and university campuses in Arizona. The moves comes after Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a similar version of the bill earlier this year.

Arizona lawmakers say they've re-written the bill and feel it's ready to go before the state legislature.

According to azcentral.com they plan to introduce it when the new session starts on Jan. 9. Sponsors have held pre-session meetings with university and law enforcement officials and have also received crucial political backing by the National Rifle Association.

The bill would allow folks with concealed-weapons permits to carry guns on campus. However, schools would still be able to stop people from bringing guns inside buildings, as long as they post a sign and provide secure gun storage.

Earlier this year the state legislature passed a bill allowing guns on campus roads and sidewalks, but Brewer vetoed it saying it was poorly written and did not clearly define a right of way.

If Brewer signs the new version of the bill, Arizona would become only the fifth state in the country to allow guns on campus.
