TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A shooting in which a 17-year-old boy was killed on New Year's Eve near the Forty Niner Country Club on Tucson's east side happened during a drug deal, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies arrested Keanu Deano Castaneda, 19, early Sunday morning. He was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on one count of first-degree murder, Deputy Dawn Barkman said.

The victim was identified as Carlos Sandoval. He was a senior at Salpointe High School.

On Tuesday, the Sheriff's department sent out an update on the crime in a press release. It  said Sandoval and Castaneda "knew each other through mutual friends" and their meeting on New Year's Eve was a planned drug deal.

"All individuals in attendance were there at the request of Mr. Sandoval to provide security during the drug transaction," the Sheriff's department said in its release. "Mr. Sandoval was killed when Mr. Castaneda robbed him of the drugs."

The homicide occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday at a residence on the 2000 Block of North Forty Niner Drive.

Pima County deputies located a vehicle that fled the scene and detained several people inside, Barkman said.

The suspect's vehicle fled from Forty Niner Drive, Barkman said, and someone inside the residence chased it to the 12100 Block of East Barbary Coast.

Shots were fired from the suspect's vehicle at the one following, Barkman said. No one inside the chase vehicle was injured.

Witnesses and neighbors who saw the incident near East Barbary Coast called 911, providing a description of the vehicle.

Sandoval was with six to eight individuals at the Forty Niner Drive address, Barkman said.

Court records indicate Castaneda has a criminal history. He was arrested in May 2010 on  marijuana and theft charges. He also was charged in August 2011 for failure to appear at a court hearing.

Forty Niner Drive is in a luxury subdivision near the semi-private golf club.
