Border Patrol tight-lipped about deadly shooting
A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent shot and killed a suspected illegal immigrant on Sunday.
It happened Sunday morning not far from Kitt Peak in the Baboquivari Mountains southwest of Tucson.
The agency did not release a statement until Tucson News Now's Dan Marries contacted them asking for confirmation following an anonymous tip two days later.
"At 12:25 p.m. MST Sunday, a Border Patrol agent on patrol approximately 12 miles northwest of the Sasabe, Ariz., port of entry encountered an unknown number of individuals who had crossed the border illegally. During the encounter, the agent discharged his service issued weapon, resulting in the death of one of the individuals. Agents apprehended six other individuals. CBP is fully cooperating with tribal and FBI investigators."
The statement went on to read, "preliminary information indicates that a physical altercation ensued between the agent and one of the suspected illegal aliens. During the altercation the agent discharged his service issued weapon, resulting in the death of the individual."
