TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A killer whale was born at SeaWorld San Diego this morning.
Kasatka, who is estimated to be 37 years old, gave birth to her fourth calf at 6:33 a.m. in Shamu Stadium.
Her calf is estimated to be 300 to 350 pounds and 6- to 7-feet long. The calf's sex has not yet been determined.
Seconds after the birth, the calf surfaced for its first breath.
The birth is the sixth successful killer-whale birth at the park.
"The mother and baby appear to be doing very well and our initial observations indicate this is a strong healthy calf," said Mike Scarpuzzi, vice president of zoological operations. "As with any newborn, the first few days are critical. We're looking forward to the continued bonding of mom and calf and the baby beginning to nurse."
Kasatka's other offspring are Kalia (born 2004), Takara (born 1991) and Nakai (born 2001).
