TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A nine-year-old boy was airlifted to a Tucson hospital on Sunday morning, after he was accidentally shot in the leg.

Carol Capas with the Cochise County Sheriff's Office tells Tucson News Now, the shooting happened at around 7:30 a.m. off Cascabel Road and Farnsworth Field, several miles northeast of Benson.

Capas says the boy was shooting in the area with his grandfather, when he shot himself in the leg while climbing over a fence.

A DPS helicopter located the boy, and airlifted him to UAMC in Tucson, after he was stabilized at the scene.

According to medics, the boy's injury is non-life threatening, but there is significant damage to his leg, and he was undergoing surgery.

The boy underwent surgery Sunday afternoon and his grandfather is not facing child endangerment charges.
