Tucson schools receive grant for Arabic language studies

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - TwoTucson schools have received funding to grow their Arabic language programs.

Safford K-8 Magnet School and Cholla High Magnet School received a $465,000 grantto be used in the schools' International Baccalaureate programs, which includesworld language studies.

TUSD has received a previous $55,000 Arabic language grant to be used forclassroom materials and curriculum development.
"This grant allows us to increase our students' choices of world languagesavailable for study," Ignacio Ruiz, TUSD's Director of Language Acquisitionsaid. "We are building world language capacity at our IB schools to create post-highschool opportunities for our graduates."

Cholla High Magnet School has 100 students enrolled in Arabic languagecourses, while Safford K-8 Magnet School has 125 students enrolled. Thedistrict hopes to increase that number to 400 students overall over the nextfive years.
The Qatar Foundation says the district was chosen to receive the grant becauseof active cultural and education community involvement.
TUSD offers language studies in Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, French, German,Russian and Korean.
